Letter Park

Letter Park is an interactive public space for anyone and everyone to use creatively and express themselves.

This project was admitted to the City Signs for Veszprem-Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture contest. The objective was to create a recognisable city sign system shared between the cities belonging to the Culture Capital.

What does a city mean in terms of culture and living? To me, a city is primarily about the people. Letter Park plays on the idea of communication and identity. As human beings, we’re all individuals that interact and communicate, we have names and unique ways of expressing ourselves. So the idea of taking something as integral to every human and society as a speech recording system, and dividing it into pieces that can be then joined togeter again - in a completely new way, to express something different - intrigued me.

I took the English alphabet and cut the letters it into pieces. Each piece then became a physical block that could be moved, lifted, organised, joined, separated, used as a seat, a building block, for imagery, writing, and so on. The space with the letter blocks would be continually changed by the people who alter it.

As for the city sign, I decided it should be a gate that welcomes each person into this space and the experience, making them a part of the collective, creative and the interactive.
